INKJET TECHNOLOGY

What sort of printer should I buy - Inkjet or Laser?

Although inkjets were available in the 1980s, it was only in the 1990s that prices dropped enough to bring the technology to the high street. Canon invented what it terms  bubblejet technology in 1977, when, as the marketing story goes, a researcher accidentally touched an ink-filled syringe with a hot soldering iron. The heat forced a drop of ink out of the needle and so began the development of a new printing method. It was not until the 1990’s however until prices dropped sufficiently to make them available in the mass market. By that time Epson and HP had joined Canon with their own versions of this technology.

Until recently inkjet printers had one main advantage over laser printers their ability to print colour at a cost effective price. Over the last few years laser printers have caught up and a host of colour laser printers are now available – Inkjet Technology though has moved on and thanks partly to the launch of digital cameras, inkjet printers continue to be the dominant technology used in the home and small business sectors.

If you are looking for a printer and unsure as to whether or not to buy a Laser Printer or an inkjet printer then consider the following:

How much do you want to spend – Inkjet Printers are much cheaper to buy than laser printers however the running costs of inkjet printers, especially if you use manufacturers branded cartridges can be very high.

What is it you want to print? If you are mainly printing office correspondence – letters, invoices etc and only in black then normally a laser printer would be the best option, lower cost of printing – if you want to print digital photographs then most people will opt for an inkjet printer over a laser printer.

Which printers would we recommend? We don’t sell printers but speak to thousands of users every month therefore, without any facts to back this up other than experience of hundreds of thousands of customers, if we were looking for a laser printer we would tend to buy an HP LaserJet. If we were looking for an inkjet printer it is slightly different – if we wanted a good quality low cost printer for home use then we would buy an Epson. However if we wanted an inkjet printer for business/office use then we would recommend Hewlett Packard.

We don’t sell printers – this is our opinion and that of hundreds of thousands of customers. One of the main things on inkjet printers though is to use the correct paper – virtually above all else this makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE to the quality of the printing.

Good Luck!
